How Much Coffee Is Safe — Can You Drink Too Much?

Wondering how much you need to drink to get these mentioned benefits and how much caffeine from coffee is too much?

A “moderate amount” for healthy adults maxes out at 500 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is about five cups of home-brewed regular coffee or a little more than one grande Starbucks coffee (which has about 360 milligrams).

For pregnant women, the amount is less — around 200 milligrams daily or less (but many pregnant women still prefer to have none at all). Most health experts recommend drinking between one and two cups a day ideally, which isn’t associated with negative reactions but seems to be beneficial for most people. Of course, for people with specific health conditions, much less or even none might be appropriate, but we’ll get to that later on.

******I think this article is something everyone should read and take with a grain of salt. It is one Doctors opinion, but i do believe he helps to bring a lot of the good of coffee to light. But with the amount coffee some students are drinking at MSU today, DR. Axe also beings out what happens later on in the article. Especially with Starbucks now having two locations in town i dont think ingesting to much caffeine will be that hard.  healthy adults maxes out at 500 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is about five cups of home-brewed regular coffee or a little more than one grande Starbucks coffee (which has about 360 milligrams). So 5 cups at home or 2 at starbucks which is your choice? But for us causal coffee drinkers there is a lot of benefits to drinking coffee often!

  1. Max- Coffee is something I have had a love hate relationship with. I drink it almost every morning/throughout the day. Sometimes I will even drink a whole pot of french press. It’s nice that you put out all the benefits. I was surprised at how much a healthy serving of coffee daily is. I thought it would have been a lot less. I really love espresso and how it tastes and makes me feel compared to making coffee at home. I love Zocola here in town and Rockford. I also don’t think the owners of the property should have sold it to Starbucks but that is my opinion. Great post! Thanks!

    1. I really enjoyed your post about coffee and its benefits. I am normally a big coffee drinker especially when I have to get up for work at 4:40. I drink a mug every morning and if I somehow miss a day, I feel extremely tired. The only thing that I might argue to be a down side to coffee would be caffeine headaches. Thank you for the information on the benefits, I will remember them come finals week!

  2. Thanks for posting about the health benefits of coffee! I work at a bar and often drink a few cups of coffee before my shift that starts at 4pm and doesn’t end until 3am and I count on coffee to keep me awake. I am constantly hearing different opinions about if coffee is bad or good for you. But these stats help and are quite interesting, and its always great to read about other peoples opinions. The only thing I would add about the starbucks serving compared to home brewed coffee is how much added sugars are in starbucks drinks. I think people forget that starbucks coffees are unhealthy due to added sugars in the flavorings, not the actual coffee. Thanks for sharing!
